Athletes from Spain, Germany, Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, Belgium and other European countries will compete on 25 October in one of the most demanding events on the programme, which will award 25,000 euros in prize money
The Challenge Barcelona Triatló is cementing its international standing with the participation of over 70 PRO triathletes registered for the Middle Distance event, who will compete next Sunday, 25 October, in Barcelona. Among them are representatives from various European countries and some of the biggest names on the current triathlon scene, raising the sporting standard of an event which also counts towards the PTO rankings and serves as a qualifier for The Championship in Šamorin (Slovakia).
Among the participants, the Frenchman Tom Richard – currently ranked 14th in the ITU rankings – stands out; he arrives in Barcelona having finished 8th in the World Triathlon Championship Series in London and 6th in Alghero in 2026. Also competing will be Britain’s James Teagle, who finished 8th at The Championship in Šamorin and was runner-up at the Ironman 70.3 Tallinn 2025, as well as Germany’s Hannes Butters, who finished 2nd at the Ironman 70.3 Tallinn 2026 and at the Triathlon Köln 2026.
In the women’s category, one of the standout competitors will be Caroline Pohle, currently ranked 20th in the PTO rankings, champion of The Championship in Šamorin and 10th at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship. Also competing will be Spain’s Sofia Aguayo Mauri, who finished 5th in the 2025 Challenge Barcelona Triathlon and 7th in the 2026 European Middle Distance Championships, and Britain’s Eve Sealy, ranked 17th in the ITU rankings, 6th in the 2026 European Middle Distance Championships and 7th in the 2026 Ironman 70.3 Poznan.
25,000 euros in prize money and a place at The Championship in Šamorin
One of the main attractions of this category is its prize fund. The PRO Middle Distance will distribute a total of 25,000 euros in prize money amongst the top six finishers in the men’s and women’s categories.
Furthermore, the event will count towards the PTO ranking (silver category) and serve as a qualifier for The Championship, the Challenge Family grand final held in Šamorin, Slovakia.
This event is exclusively for PRO-category triathletes, and the course will take the athletes from Mar Bella beach to the Maresme coastline. After the swim, the cycling route will pass through Barcelona, Montgat and Vilassar de Mar before returning to the city. Finally, the run will take place along Barcelona’s seafront promenade, offering views of the main attractions of the Barcelona coastline.
To compete as a PRO and be eligible for prize money, amongst other benefits, athletes must prove their professional status by providing a Challenge Family PRO licence or a letter from their national federation certifying their status as a professional athlete.
